First Approach to a Multilayer Finite Element Model for People with Transfemoral Amputation
Resumen
The amputation of the lower limb of the human body is one of the most traumatic events in people's lives. It represents substantial socioeconomic, psychological, and functional challenge. The design of appropriate prosthetic systems aims to improve the quality of life of people with lower limb amputation. This study proposes a novel multilayer approach for soft residual tissue, and it is developed for 1 patient with unilateral transfemoral amputation. In total 2 numerical models were developed, a bulk model (considers the soft tissue as a single volume) and a multilayer model (discriminates the soft tissue in each of its main layers). The analysis was focused on the residual limb¿socket interaction. The mean CPRESS obtained for multilayer model is 24.8 kPa, and for the bulk model is 29.9 kPa. Moreover, it was observed that there is a noticeable difference in the stress distribution between the bulk and multilayer models.
