Fractured crystalline basement reservoirs can carried significant hydrocarbon reserves in petroleum basins, as shown by they worldwide distribution and recent major gas and oil discoveries in Europe and Asia (England, Indonesia and Yemen). One of the major questions in this type of reservoirs is the nature of the structural network, including the fracture and matrix relations, their connectivity and the petrophysics properties. The Upper Magdalena Valley Basin in southern Colombia is a mature basin, characterized by a Jurassic volcano-sedimentary and plutonic basement which is commonly cover in discordance by Early Cretaceous fluvio-deltaic clastic rocks that represent the major reservoir of the basin. Subsurface evaluation have also shown that structural traps including faulted anticlines that also deformed the basement. This project seeks to reconstruct the structural evolution and understand and characterized the fracture system that affect this basement, by means of a multi-scale surface evaluation of the exposed Jurassic basement analogues that limit the basin or are also found as intra-basin exposed highs. With this type of study we expect to understand the deformational history including relative (cross-cutting relations) an absolute (low temperature thermochronology, and Ar-Ar + U-Pb direct dating of neoformed fabric minerals) temporal constraints, the regional pattern of fracturation (regional lineament evaluation), outcrop to micro-scale fracture evaluation including 1D and 2D scan-line and window analysis based on direct field observations and drone related image evaluation, which will gave insights on the structural network connectivity. This approach together with the petrophysics characteristics of the rock matrix will allow to assessed the reservoir quality potential of the crystalline basement and provide decision elements to a subsurface exploration of a new basement play in this and other Colombian basins of Colombia.
