Development of a bio-refinery system for organic acid production, bioenergy generation and nutrient recovery using Fishery wastes from Tumaco, Colombia.
Resumen
Fishery wastes (FW) represent 10−50% of the production. The disposal methods are ocean or landfill disposal, methods associated with environmental and health issues. Tumaco, the second largest city in Colombian pacific coast, produces more than 700 tons of FW every year. Artisanal fishing represents 15% of the fish production, as they are a population associated with very-low income, forced migration, and health issues. This population is highly affected by the lacks of waste management strategies for FW. Supported by COLCIENCIAS, The Universidad Nacional de Colombia at Palmira (UNP) has been working in processes to utilize FW to improve Tumaco’s fishery industry. During this research UNP established FW as a suitable feedstock for Anaerobic mixed fermentation (AMF). AMF utilizes a combination of anaerobic microorganisms to breakdown wastes and produce renewable energy (biogas) or chemicals. FW are a complicated waste and a multicomponent solution is necessary. Therefore, this project is looking to establish the bases for the first bio-refinery to transform FW into volatile fatty acids (VFA), biogas, and fertilizers. The bio-refinery is a two stages process, An initial AFM process will be used to produce and selectively recover VFA; whereas, the second stage is an anaerobic digestion process for the production of biogas and fertilizers from the undigested residues and unrecovered acids from the VFA production. A bio-refinery from FW will improve Tumaco’s communities by reducing the issues related with FW disposal, creating inexpensive renewable energy for cooking or power, and by producing an additional income from the sales of VFA and fertilizers. This innovative process will be delivered by a team with great experience in the development of renewable production of energy and chemicals from residues with members from the University of Southampton (UOS), Swansea University (SU), and UNP.
