Nonlinear Optics Characterization and Study of Supercontinuum Generation Properties of Organic Dyes
Resumen
In this project, both a general theoretical and experimental study of the nonlinear optical characteristics and Supercontinuum generation properties of organic dye solutions will be performed. To measure the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of organic dyes, we are going to use multiple nonlinear optical (NLO) techniques develop by the CREOL Nonlinear Optics (CREOL-NLO) group. They include: the famous Z-scan technique (with >4,000 citations) and the beam deflection technique that gives absolutely calibrated measurements of the nonlinear refractive index. The CREOL-NLO group has recently purchased a >$0.5 million laser system from Coherent that produces 12 mJ of 40 femtosecond laser pulses at 780nm at a 1 kHz repetition rate that pumps tunable optical parametric generator/amplifier systems. They are using this to produce a spectrally bright source of White-Light-Continuum (WLC) that spans the spectral range from 2,000 nm to 400 nm, i.e. greater than 2 octaves. We plan to use this WLC with the Dual-Arm Z-scan technique to measure the spectrum of nonlinear absorption along with the dispersion of nonlinear refraction of a series of nonlinear optical materials being provided to us by our collaborators around the world. The specific materials that we will be looking at will be organic dyes from researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology, the University of Washington and the Institute of Physics, and National Academy of Sciences, Kiev, Ukraine. Once, we have measured the NLO properties of the organic dye samples, we will use the most promising of these to fill our hollow core photonic crystal fibers (HCPCF) by using the gap-splicing technique reported in [Optics Express, Vol. 20, No. 7, Pg. 8148, March 26 2012], where no special pressurized equipment is needed. Finally, we will use a femtosecond laser aligned in the HCPCF filled with organic dyes and investigate the generation of Supercontinuum.
