GROWING AND CHARACTERIZATION OF YBACO2O5.5 THIN FILMS USING DC SPUTTERING TECHNIQUE
Resumen
Transition metal oxides with perovskite-like structure exhibit a variety of fascinating physical properties due to the strong inter-play between spin, charge, orbital and lattice degrees of freedom. Like other transition metal oxides, cobaltites can accommodate oxygen va-cancies giving rise to variable ratios of Co2+, Co3+ and Co4+, each with three possible spin states, namely low-spin (LS) state, intermediate-spin (IS) state and the high-spin (HS) state, which have a strong influence on the electrical and magnetic properties of the system. The ordered, oxygen deficient perovskites with the ideal formula LnBaCo2O5.5 have been a topic of numerous investigations due to their fascinating magnetic and magnetotransport properties. These cobaltites exhibit successive paramagnetic-ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic (PM-FM-AFM) transi-tions within 200 K to 300 K and an insulator-metal transition between 300 K and 400 K. Thin films of the layered cobaltite YBaCo2O5.5 will be grown on (001)-oriented SrTiO3 substrates by means of high oxygen-pressure dc sputtering. The substrate temperature is an important deposition parameter. In the present project, the temperature will be varied between 700 and 850 C in order to optimize this growing parameter. The films will be characterized after their structural, morphological and magnetic properties employing standard characterization methods. It should be signalized that no reports on the growth and characterization of YBaCo4O7 films grown on crystalline substrates using physical deposition methods exist in the literature.
