Upcycling plastic waste reinforced by modified natural fique fibre
Resumen
Our aim is to reinforce the recycled Polypropylene with natural short Fique fibres, to retain its mechanical properties and achieve a truly recyclable plastic material. Plastic waste disposal is a serious global challenge to avoid water and soil contamination. Polypropylene (PP) is one of the most widely used types of plastics, but only 10% is recycled. It significantly loses its mechanical properties after the recycling process. By adding inexpensive strong natural fibres to the composite, the properties of the recycled Polypropylene can be significantly improved. Fique fibre waste as short fibres with good mechanical properties, are generated during its process and currently has no commercial value. The cellulose content of the fibre can be increased by novel heat treatment to increase its mechanical properties and provide a better bonding between the Polypropylene and the modified fibre.
