Biodegradable material for cross-Atlantic transport baskets of fresh products including avocados to the UK.
Resumen
The packing sector is one of the most damaging industries in the plastic pollution crisis. Large amount of products and goods are transported in plastic containers and packaging. The aim of this project is to propose a new biodegradable material combination to replace traditional plastic materials. We will collaborate with Caoca and Unal Universities as well as Cartama UK LTD and Riduco in Colombia to build a demonstrator crate and examine its function and manufacturing cost for a cross-Atlantic journey of avocados imported to the UK. PolyLactic Acid (PLA) is a biodegradable polymer with mechanical properties similar to Poly Propylene (PP) heavily used in plastic industry. However, its cost per kg is more than three times the cost of polypropylene. The main challenge of this project is to add natural particles to bring the total cost of the biodegradable products down and still meet the mechanical requirements. This will provide a new market route for inexpensive natural fibre products e.g. Fique fibre produced by agricultural families with disadvantaged backgrounds. The pillar of the crate will be manufacture in the first stage and the full crate will be made in the industrial production line at Riduco in the second stage.
