Fique natural fibre composites – A new degradable composite material for local automotive industries in Colombia
Resumen
Our vision is to create, characterise and promote a new composite material reinforced with Fique, a strong, cheap and less explored natural fibre native to Colombia. Natural fibres are considered as a great potential replacement for synthetic fibres, mainly glass. The use of natural fibres as reinforcements can significantly support poor agricultural families producing such fibres and reduce environmental impacts of developing the country. Fique fibres grows in the leaves of the Fique plant and are traditionally used for rope and twine. It is also one of the most used and produced natural fibres in Colombia but it has not been scientifically characterised and explored as reinforcement for structural industrial applications. This proposal will evaluate and characterize Fique-fibre reinforced composites with the main objective of applying them in primary or secondary structural part of an electric tri-cycle vehicle, developed and manufactured in Colombia by Compoestructuras, a local company in Medellin. The outcome will be a new high-value product, providing a prosporose market for the local farmers producing Fique fibres. Compared to imported synthetic fibres, the Fique fibres are significantly cheaper and therefore will give local industries a cheaper material with lower environmental impact. In addition to several economical and environmental benefits of this material to farmers, producers and end users, this proposal is well aligned with the efforts of the UN and Colombian government to substitute coca plants with other high value products in the agriculture industry as a part of its fight against the illegal drugs.
