Changes in geotechnical properties of a soil exposed to solid waste leachates in laboratory and field
Resumen
solid waste disposal is great problem affronted by different cities due to low availability of soil for such uses, in addition to the wrong management and control practices in some landfills that become in potential sources of hydrogeological and environmental contamination, due to the risk associated for the case in which leachates percolate the ground and reach the groundwater, representing a toxic hazard. Urban solid waste management, nowadays represents an important environmental, economic and social problem around the world, due to mainly that solid waste is growing up faster than global population. Therefore leachates are recognized as an important problem and its evaluation and risk management is considered essential, if good leachate management practices are not applied in landfills such as proper collection of solid waste, isolated storage sites, suitable treatments and controlled shedding, these will become in a potential contamination source threating the soil, shallow and underground waters. In this scene, the importance of the compacted soil layers control is clear in order to prevent the advance of contamination fronts, as well as the effect caused by leachates in the geotechnical properties of the soil exposed to these contaminants. That is why we are proposing this research where it is studied the change in some geotechnical properties of a soil sample subjected to the effect of solid waste leachates in field, and a soil sample subjected to leachates in laboratory, so that such methodology allows deduce from the laboratory, possible property variations such as void ratio, structure, chemistry, shearing resistance, consolidation and suction of the soils exposed in field to leachates of no-controlled landfills
