COFFEE PULP CHARACTERIZATION AND TREATMENT AS ADSORBENTE MATERIAL, FOR HEAVY METAL REMOVAL FROM LEACHATE OF LANDFILLS --
Resumen
In order to add value to waste from the coffee benefit, this research physically and chemically characterized the coffee pulp from a coffee organic crop from farm located in Santa Bárbara (Antioquia) municipality, analyzing whether or not this is in a material promising of heavy metals removal from wastewater, such as leachate landfills. Initially, the coffee pulp was chemically and thermally modified or treated to improve its physical and chemical conditions. It was characterized before and after its modification in terms of its zero-point charge, surface area, identification and quantification of functional groups, elemental and morphological analysis, as well as in its lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose content. Also, sorption tests were carried out in batches through Cu and Pb chemical kinetics, with leachates from Neil Road landfill, in Chico, Northern California, USA, to know the capacity of the coffee pulp removal. The results showed that material has a high potential of liquid effluents treatment because the removal rate was reached between 70 and 90%, especially when in the solution are heavy metals simultaneously. Also, can be concluded that, under experimental conditions carried out, the sorption through coffee pulp will allow the legally established permissible limits to be satisfactorily fulfilled. --
