TOWARDS A METHODOLOGICAL TOOL FOR THE INTEGRAL EVALUATION OF THE SUSTAINABILITY OF A BIOCOMPOSITE MATERIAL: A CASE STUDY
Resumen
Sustainability of products and services has become a compulsory requirement and an essential approach for organizations, governments, companies and society in general. Among the various ways of measuring sustainability have been developed, those based on life cycle thinking provide one of the framework for assessing the potential impacts of products and services. However, despite sustainability triple bottom line focuses (environmental, economic and social dimensions), the Life Cycle Assessment is the most mature and prominent available tool. The Life Cycle Cost and Social Life Cycle Assessment are still under development. As methodologies of integration have coming up Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment and Life Cycle Engineering, which integrate three sustainability dimensions, between them the technical aspect. The systematic literature review revealed the knowledge gap around these tools. The results indicated that the application of a sustainability assessment requires overcome the immature degree of social dimension, generate adequate indicators, include stakeholders, an efficient communication, systemic methodologies of assessment and integration and more empirical applications. This doctoral thesis proposes the design of a methodology based on life cycle sustainability assessment and life cycle engineering in order to obtain suitable and reliable indicators of the technical, economic, environmental, and social dimensions to build a holistic sustainability index for biocomposites materials. A case of study about the sustainability of biocomposite materials fabricated with two hybrid matrices (mixtures of synthetic plastics and bioplastics) and different contents of natural (banana-platain) fiber will be used for the development and the application of the proposed method.
