Effect of Temperature on Mechanical Properties of Colombian Unconsolidated Sandstones Through Triaxial Tests
Resumen
Hydrocarbons reservoirs can be subjected to changes of temperature due to different factors during the production time of the oilfield. In heavy oil reservoirs, heat injection has become a very useful method to produce heavy oil in countries as Canada and Venezuela. Oilfield development projects that involve the injection of steam, hot water and air in the reservoir are expanding worldwide rapidly in order to increase the oil recovery in the reservoirs. The heat reduces the oil viscosity allowing it to flow easily from the porous of the formation into the wellbores. Colombia has an important amount of reserves of heavy oil, whereby is important to understand how is the mechanical and petrophysical behavior of typical Colombian formations at different temperatures and different effective confining stress. Geomechanical behavior of reconstituted samples from a Colombian heavy oil outcrop is evaluated using a high temperature, high-pressure triaxial cell at three different effective confining stress (0.4, 4.0 and 8.2 MPa) and a range of temperature from 50°C to 230°C in order to represent the initial in-situ conditions and thermal recovery conditions. Parameters that were required in the constitutive model such as Young´s and bulk moduli and internal friction angle and cohesion are measured at every temperature tested. In a general way, it is concluded that reconstituted cores submitted to higher effective confining stress (4.0 and 8.2 MPa) are under contraction during all test time while the cores under lower effective confining stress (0.4 MPa) are under dilation. Besides, the stiffness of the material increases with the effective confining stress and decreases with the temperature; additionally, the strength properties (internal friction angle and cohesion) decrease while the temperature increases.
