Habitat Use by Nocturnal Birds in the Cauca River Canyon
Resumen
Biodiversity is not equally distributed around the globe, and the tropics are one of the places where many hotspots can be found. The tropics also host habitats and species that are currently under great threat due to different factors such as pollution, deforestation and habitat loss, among many others. One of these particular habitats is the Tropical Dry Forest, which has a remanent of only 8% of its original size in Colombia. Despite some studies on the ecology of the species inhabiting these areas have been conducted, most efforts have been placed on diurnal communities, leaving nocturnal ones aside. In this study, we aim to understand how environmental variables are mediating the habitat use of different nocturnal birds in the northern Cauca River Canyon of Colombia. To achieve this, we will (i) characterize the habitat use of the detected nocturnal birds in the area, (ii) describe the study area in terms of its environmental variables, and (iii) describe the relationship between habitat use of the detected species and the environmental variables. Vocalizations of nocturnal birds will be sampled in 80 sites distributed across several municipalities in this region, using SWIFT recorders. Registered information will be analyzed using Arbimon software, variables will be extracted through GIS software and GLM models will be conducted in order to associate environmental variables with acoustic information.
