Cytogenetic characterization of Kikuyu (Cenchrus clandestinus) present in regions of Antioquia department (Colombia).
Resumen
In Colombian high tropic areas, a large part of cattle production depends on grasses, which are the main source of food. One of the most important species is Cenchrus clandestinus, which represents the basis of almost all the forage feed of specialized dairy from high tropics. Since there is little information about cytogenetic aspects of this forage, the objective of this research was to determine its chromosomal endowment and the ploidy level of samples from different regions of the department of Antioquia, in order to contribute to the understanding and characterization of this important resource. Analysis showed homogeneity in the cytogenetic and molecular analysis of all zones evaluated, suggesting the presence of a diploid variety of this species in the department of Antioquia with chromosomal constitution 2n=36, however, the hypothetical presence of polyploid varieties, which can be found in very low frequency, is not discarded.
