Methods to improve the quality of recycled concrete aggregates and their effect on the durability of concretes
The objective of this work is to identify the knowledge of the existing improvement treatments of recycled concrete aggregates (RCA), and their effect on the long-term properties of concretes manufactured with treated RCA, specifically in relation to compressive strength, carbonation and chloride ion penetration and their correlation, as relevant properties if reinforcement concretes, establishing a correlation between them, which have been little addressed as a review of the state of the art. Although the durability performances of concretes from RCA have generally been found to be inferior to those of conventional concretes, a possible improvement is identified by applying a treatment based on the reinforcement of the cement paste adhered to the surface of the RCA. However, the choice of the treatment to be used will be conditioned by its availability, cost and environmental impact.
