Efficient use of alternative carbonaceous fuels in the power generation in Colombia by implementation of fluidized bed reactors
Resumen
The improvement of the efficiency is at present imperative for the power production processes based on fossil fuels, since CO2 free alternatives are not in the position yet to cover the current demand. An approach that allows to separate the CO2 from combustion processes and to set it for sequestration are the so called zero emission technologies, the different routes proposed are: post-combustion capture, pre-combustion capture, oxy-fuel combustion, and capture from industrial processes. In consideration of the intensive use of coal in actual and future times as well as the reemergence of biomass in the energy market, the efforts are lately put on the development and/or implementation of technologies for use of solid fuels. Technologies such as gasification, chemical looping and others, offer high potential for efficient use of alternative solid carbonaceous fuels (such as biomass and biomass waste). The reliability of such processes relies often on the contact efficiency and contact time between solid and gaseous phases, which need to be maximized. Since the operation involves solids and gas, the most suitable technology to implement gas-solid processes is the use of fluidized beds. Fluidized beds facilitate the transport of solids and provide good gas-solid contact efficiency as well as excellent heat exchange properties. Furthermore, the transport of reactive particles and heat from one reaction zone to other is favored by using circulating fluidized beds. Some of the processes for the energetic use of solid fuels that are implemented to be performed in fluidized beds. These processes, together with alternative carbonaceous fuels will serve to the energy production diversification and the increase of the energy security in places not connected to the main grid or counting with limited energy sources, since they can be adapted to the fuels available and the needs of the user community or sector. Considering the availability of biomass and waste products in Colombia, the uprising of alternative power generation technologies and the need for decentralized and sustainable energy production in the country, the processes discussed in the present proposal hold a great potential to become important branch in the Colombian energy landscape. The scope of the present proposal is therefore, to open the way for the fluidization technology in the use of alternative fuels in the country.
