Community whale watching in a community-managed marine protected area on Colombia's Pacific Coast.
Resumen
The project will start on May 1st, 2024 and end on October 1st, 2025, lasting 18 months. The selected funding priority is on conserving biological biodiversity by promoting responsible whale watching practices in the Community Managed MPA Tribugá Gulf - Cabo Corrientes on the Colombian Pacific coast (CPC). The project aims to foster conservation measures and sustainable management of marine mammals in the Tribugá Gulf by addressing several challenges. Through this project we intend to 1) Enhance the capacities of local whale-watching operators by fostering knowledge-sharing through dialogue and field practices ; 2) Facilitate the establishment of whale-watching community association(s) to improve cooperation amongst operators, reduce pressure on whales, promote best WW practices, and provide equal opportunities and economical benefits for all the stakeholders involved.; 3) Further and strengthen the ongoing scientific data collection efforts by the monitoring of humpback whales and small cetaceans, with a particular emphasis on boat-based research, to enhance our understanding of humpback whales' ecology and the ecological impact of current whale-watching practices for more informed conservation and management strategies. s. Results will be shared with the local community and tourists by showcasing best practices and the importance of responsible tourism. Additionally, the scientific results obtained from this research endeavours will be shared with the pertinent authorities responsible for developing and enforcing regulated whale-watching initiatives, ensuring that our findings contribute to informed decision-making for sustainable management and conservation measures.
