Energy for Development: promoting access to renewable and sustainable energy in Chocó. A UK-Colombia collaboration
Resumen
Chocó is one of the poorest Departments in Colombia, and faces pressing social, environmental and economic issues. In 2015, 66% of the population live in poverty, up from 63% in 2013. Electricity access in Chocó is among the lowest in the country: 20% of households lack access, and 30% have partial access. Access to modern energy services is crucial for social and economic development, and renewable energy can improve livelihoods and income. This collaboration focuses on energy access for poor communities in Chocó and draws on pilot projects to provide sustainable and affordable electricity access. The collaboration will ensure that the energy projects respond to the needs of local populations, promote sustainable economic growth, enhance available resources, and mitigate climate change. It will generate new capacity, transfer knowledge and reinforce business design, drawing on multidisciplinary technical, socio-economic, modelling and policy expertise.
