BIO-empowered Oxidative Coupling of Methane (OCM) process
Resumen
The key objective of BIOCM project is the design of an Oxidative Coupling of Methane (OCM) process which efficiently converts the methane produced from biomass waste into C2H4. The focus of the project will be on the analysis of compatibility of the OCM catalyst and downstream unit operations in the OCM process with the specifications of the biogas feed. Development of an efficient adsorbent (prepared from bio-based material) and adsorption/desorption system for ethylene separation, and other efficient downstream operating units, are the main steps toward achieving this aim. Combination of the OCM process with other relevant processes, such as biomass pyrolysis and gasification into an integrated Biorefinery concept. All these will be experimentally investigated in a mini-plant facility and the validated models of those units will be used for conducting a comprehensive investigation regarding the effect of parameters to improve the design and operation of each unit especially in the bigger scales. This also allows performing a techno-economic analysis of various process structures starting from biomass and producing ethylene. Comparing the environmental and economic aspects of the developed bio-based OCM process, which is known for short as BIOCM technology in this project, with the ones associated with the conventional bio-methane production and bio-ethylene process via bio-ethanol which are of special interest in this project. After tackling the risks and challenges in this project, it is expected that the resulting BIOCM technology becomes an industrially viable solution for converting the biomass wastes to valuable ethylene especially in remote areas. Using the bio-based materials for developing the adsorbent in this system is an innovation here. Constructing the proposed heat and mass integration in the reactor section and the process downstream allows reducing the required energy and operating cost of the process.
