Generating accessible electrical wind energy for rural areas in Colombia
Resumen
In Colombia, electricity coverage is 99.72% percent in urban areas and 87.83% percent in rural areas. 425,212 homes in more than 1700 small and very poor communities do not yet have access to electricity1, their geographical distribution is shown in Fig. 1 2. Many of them are near to the pacific coast, the Caribbean and also to the “llanos”. Fig 2. Shows the mean air speed, a comparison with Fig. 1, permits to see that many small non connected towns are located in the Uraba gulf and some are in the Caribbean where winds have speeds over 5 km/h. Our vision is to bring to these poor rural areas an aerogenerator which has these characteristics: cheap, reliable and easy to maintain. This type of turbine has been already developed in Perú by the non-profit organization Windaid4. Although, it has been quite successful, there are some technical clearly identified issues both in the structural and electrical parts. This project has the aim to improve current version of low power wind turbine developed by Windaid (500 to 1550 W), and also to decrease its price through the use of fique natural fibres in some of the components of this turbines to substitute the expensive an non environmental friendly carbon ones. The project involves processing, manufacturing and characterization of mechanical properties of the composites and also of the developed blades. On the other hand, electronic controller needs to be improved to keep the batteries properly protected and charged. The outcome will be a cheap, reliable turbine for aero-generation which will be installed and tested at Isla Fuerte a Caribbean Colombian non connected community. Another aim is encouraging the implementation of low power wind turbines in Colombia and promoting home energy production with a low environmental impact in rural places. ________ 1. «Consultas Estadisticas». www.siel.gov.co.
