Influence of Ar-CO2-O2 Shielding Gas Composition on the Microstructural Evolution and Crystallographic Texture of ER70S-6 WAAM Components
Resumen
In this project proposal, the Department for Cutting and Joining Manufacturing Processes (TFF) at Kassel-Universität and the research group Analysis of Failures, Integrity, and Surfaces (AFIS) at Universidad Nacional de Colombia (UNAL) have established a strategic partnership to investigate the microstructural evolution and crystallographic texture of components produced by Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM). This research specifically addresses the critical role of shielding atmospheres in governing material integrity. By correlating gas-metal interactions with phase transformations and grain orientations through advanced Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD), this study tackles the industrial challenge of inconsistent mechanical performance in large-scale additive components. This project directly aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, by enhancing the technical readiness of WAAM as a high-efficiency alternative to traditional energy-intensive manufacturing. Furthermore, it supports SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, as WAAM significantly reduces material waste and carbon footprints compared to subtractive processes. The study provides the fundamental knowledge necessary to transition from conventional casting/machining toward sustainable, localized, and resource-efficient production cycles. AFIS-UNAL will leverage its expertise in material synthesis to fabricate samples under three distinct Ar-CO2-O2 environments and perform baseline characterizations. Subsequently, TFF-Kassel will utilize its state-of-the-art facilities for high-resolution EBSD mapping, including Grain Reference Orientation Deviation and texture evolution analysis, to quantify how the atmosphere dictates solidification patterns.
