Cacao On Capable Options for Common Agriculture problems
Resumen
Cacao On Capable Options for Common Agriculture problems (COCOA) is a program made up of professors from the National University of Colombia (UNAL) and the University of California Davis (UC Davis), focused on the search for solutions to the problems associated with the cocoa value chain and the adoption of novel agricultural technologies. The Colombian team will search for and develop natural molecules with fungicidal activity for use in cocoa crops, while the American team will simultaneously investigate adoption and acceptability of these natural fungicides by cocoa producers and consumers. Both objectives seek to ensure that cocoa becomes a highly attractive crop as a substitute for illicit crops while promoting sustainable agriculture and food security, as well as sustained economic growth and decent work for all. To meet the main objectives of this program, the UC Davis team, led by Professor Amanda Crump, will focus its efforts on social and extension work with farmers, specifically showing the benefits of the new technology developed, and the UNAL team, led by Professor Cesar Sierra will focus on the technical part of development and implementation of the fungicide. At the same time, virtual and in-person seminars will be held to show the results obtained and adjust activities according to need. Additionally, a joint UC Davis and UNAL research project will be developed, based on the results of COCOA, whose main objectives will be to study the possibility of creating a spin-off for the commercialization of fungicides or their production and commercialization directly by farmers that participate in COCOA, and that the continuation of collaborative work between the two universities allows the exchange of students from the groups in both tracks to remain active.
