The development of a bio-composite material capable of prolonging the shelf life of perishable agricultural products and reducing the generation of plastic waste in nature, can be achieved with the incorporation of nanocellulose into the matrix of Poly (lactic acid), since the cellulose nanostructure has a large specific surface area, high strength, low coefficient of thermal expansion and a reactive surface of hydroxyl groups (-OH). The latter being an interesting feature due to the availability of a modifiable surface area to achieve new properties through bi-functionalization. This would allow to improve not only a property of the PLA, but also to favor multiple properties such as the increase of the vapor barrier through the material, the control of gas permeability (O2 and CO2), and the improvement of crystallization and Thermal stability. In the process of bi-functionalization it will be necessary evaluate the performance of the bio-composite film to determine the applications that best adapt to the needs of the different perishable agricultural products, such as the transport of fruit and the storage of vegetables. |
